James R. Christina, DPM completed his undergraduate studies as a Magna Cum Laude graduate from West Virginia University with a B.A. in biology in 1979. Later that same year, he began his post-graduate studies at the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine and received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree (DPM) in 1983. After completing two years of surgical training in Southfield, Michigan and Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Christina entered private practice in Rockville, Maryland in 1985. Dr. Christina was in private practice in Rockville, Maryland for 20 years. He was involved in the Maryland Podiatric Medical Association serving as an officer and eventually as the MPMA president from 1991-1993. He was also a long time delegate from Maryland to the American Podiatric Medical Association’s House of Delegates. Dr. Christina was a member of the Maryland State Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners (the Maryland licensing board from 1999-2003) and twice was the Podiatry Section Chair at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. In 2005, Dr. Christina accepted the position of Director of Scientific Affairs for the American Podiatric Medical Association. In that position he has been intimately involved in the development and implementation of quality measures related to diabetic foot care including involvement with the Physicians Consortium for Performance Improvement (PCPI), the Quality Alliance (AQA) and the National Quality Forum (NQF). He has helped guide the 2007 Workforce Study and the Thomson Reuters Study that demonstrated the value of podiatric care to people with diabetes. He has developed expertise regarding the Medicare programs involving Physician Quality Reporting (PQRS) and Meaningful Use of Electronic Health Records (MU). At the 2015 APMA House of Delegates, after an extensive search process, Dr. Christina was confirmed to become the next Executive Director and CEO of APMA. He assumed that position on October 24, 2015.
